So of course you’ve been hauled off to jail by the corrupt Magisters-the game’s fanatical villains-ostensibly to stop you from ruining the world. And you just so happen you be a sourcerer with a divine calling, born with the ability to wield this powerful magic, talk to the dead and feast on souls. The world’s a mess, you see, with monstrous beasties rampaging wherever there’s source magic. Original Sin 2’s main quest calls to mind Baldur’s Gate II: Throne of Bhaal, both being races to godhood. And there are more of these moments than I could reasonably count.Ĭompanions not only assist you while undertaking their own personal quests, they are ultimately your competition. I never told her, though I could have, and nothing came of the conversation, but it did matter, making the fight retroactively more memorable. And there was his mother, boasting about how good he is, how clever he is, and how much she loves him. He was a monster of a man I’d met hours ago. As she gushed about her son, it dawned on me, I knew this guy. Its owner was an affable, chatty woman and proud mother. One of the first places I hit up in any new RPG village is the local watering hole, so when I arrived in Driftwood during the game’s third chapter, I immediately headed to the Black Bull. It’s daunting, but it’s also a fair price to pay for the weight it gives to decisions. These ripples of consequence result in a world that feels alive, and even give NPCs agency, but they also inspire hesitation when decisiveness is required out of the fear that one or more of these choices will kill another quest. Many of the NPCs you’ll meet have relationships and allegiances that affect more than one quest, and seemingly unrelated events can collide, cutting adventures short. The journal quickly becomes impossible to parse, and directions from NPCs can be vague, but it’s another otherwise welcome feature that really complicates things: the connected nature of the world. They’re great, fat with unexpected turns and rewarding character moments, but keeping track of them is hard work. Larian loves its headscratchers, populating Rivellon with riddles, moral conundrums and ancient mysteries. These neat tricks don’t mean the quests are simple. In 2011, LastPass publicly disclosed a “traffic anomaly” on their server that they couldn’t account for. Regarding the OTP attack, it is a “targeted attack”, requiring an attacker to know the user’s username to potentially exploit it, and serve that custom attack per user, activity which we have not seen. If you are concerned that you’ve used bookmarklets before September 2013 on non-trustworthy sites, you may consider changing your master password and generating new passwords, though we don’t think it is necessary. If you’re interested in getting into the technical details of either exploit, this appears to be the research paper in question.Īs for what you LastPass recommends their users do: So why’d they wait a year? As LastPass fixed the bugs quickly and had no evidence the bugs were ever exploited maliciously, it says they opted to let the research team publish their research on their own schedule.

Somehow it suggested to me that designers in New York simply feel more secure with themselves and their position … and therefore they aren’t in the least afraid to meet new designers.” New York Graphic Design as Inspiration “I was able to meet all kinds of designers and art directors at all levels with no trouble. Or maybe it’s the access you get in the New York graphic design world, as San Francisco designer and educator Martin Venezky recounts. Consider Paul Rand, Alvin Lustig, Bradbury Thompson, Alexey Brodovitch, Herbert Bayer and Cipe Pineles. It could be the history, the ghosts of designers past. Given the difficulties-and that border-free democratizing force known as the internet-why do so many designers succumb to the New York graphic design siren call? Everyone’s New York Dream is different, and when it comes to making it to the city and truly “making it,” enthusiasm and resilience are two ingredients you need for the endeavor. The fantasy goes something like this: You arrive in New York City and start at the bottom, and eventually become partner at a prestigious firm you open your own firm you design for a large publishing house you work in-house for a Fortune 100 company you break into the comic book industry as a successful illustrator and expand your client base to become a freelance illustrator known all over the world or, of course, you. Recasting it to play a more meaningful role in building the futures we all hope to see. The concept? Perhaps sensing the young man's innate intellectual abilities, his uncle, a graduate of the University of Cambridge's Trinity College, persuaded Newton's mother to have him enter the university. Newton was soon sent back to King's School to finish his basic education. Newton failed miserably, as he found farming monotonous. Her plan was to make him a farmer and have him tend the farm. His mother pulled him out of school at age 12. Newton was enrolled at the King's School in Grantham, a town in Lincolnshire, where he lodged with a local apothecary and was introduced to the fascinating world of chemistry. She brought along her three small children from her second marriage. He anxiously obsessed over his published work, defending its merits with irrational behavior.Īt age 12, Newton was reunited with his mother after her second husband died. The experience left an indelible imprint on Newton, later manifesting itself as an acute sense of insecurity. When he was 3 years old, his mother, Hannah Ayscough Newton, remarried a well-to-do minister, Barnabas Smith, and went to live with him, leaving young Newton with his maternal grandmother. A premature baby born tiny and weak, Newton was not expected to survive. Newton was the only son of a prosperous local farmer, also named Isaac, who died three months before he was born. Using the "old" Julian calendar, Newton's birth date is sometimes displayed as December 25, 1642. Newton was born on January 4, 1643, in Woolsthorpe, Lincolnshire, England. In 1705, he was knighted by Queen Anne of England, making him Sir Isaac Newton. In 1687, he published his most acclaimed work, Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica (Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy), which has been called the single most influential book on physics. Isaac Newton was a physicist and mathematician who developed the principles of modern physics, including the laws of motion and is credited as one of the great minds of the 17th-century Scientific Revolution. In this article, I discuss the way Hellblade has been praised and critiqued for its use of mental illness as a mechanic in order to compare it to The Cat Lady and Fran Bow. The Cat Lady (2012) and Fran Bow (2015) are two independent psychological horror adventure games which articulate the tensions and connections between perceived madness, psychosis, and seeing hidden truths. He identifies Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice (2017) as a game which better enfolds mental illness into its narrative, although it has been critiqued by others for invalidating real experiences of mental illness and merely using psychosis as a plot device (Faulkner, 2017 Lacina, 2017 Scaife, 2017).Īlthough Hellblade has been both applauded and critiqued for this supposedly novel approach, there are earlier games which also used psychosis as an in-game mechanic without resorting to sanity metres. For example, Aaron Souppouris ( 2015) points out that many games which include mental illness as a mechanic problematically attempt to quantify “sanity” or “insanity” with metres, as in Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem (2002) and Amnesia: The Dark Descent (2010). This is a difficult approach to take and can lead to mixed results. Other than being a “motivation” for villainy, madness and mental illnesses are sometimes used in games as a mechanic or affordance which influences the gameplay experience. Some famous examples are Kefka ( Final Fantasy VI, 1994), SHODAN ( System Shock, 1994 System Shock 2, 1999), Sephiroth ( Final Fantasy VII, 1997), Chai ( Shenmue, 1999), Dahlia ( Silent Hill, 1999), Sander Cohen ( BioShock, 2007), GLaDOS ( Portal, 2007 Portal 2, 2011), The Joker ( Batman: Arkham series, 2009-2013), Vaas ( Far Cry 3, 2012), and Pagan Min ( Far Cry 4, 2014).īeyond generally being inaccurate representations of mental illness, these villains underscore the offensive and dangerous association of madness with violence which prevails in Western culture. Many video games feature violent villains who cackle maniacally display extreme mood swings have severe identity crises and mental breakdowns are delusional or psychotic display sociopathic, narcissistic, or psychopathic behaviours or are simply described within the game using ableist language such as “crazy,” “unhinged,” “deranged,” “criminally insane,” etc. That “interior perversion” in games is usually evilness obsession with revenge or power or the desire to destroy the world or spread chaos. As Edmond Chang (2017) observes in his discussion of queerness, madness, and BioShock, “insanity has been stereotypically used as an outward manifestation of an interior perversion” (p. Although inclusivity is important, connecting madness (among other marginalized identity markers, such as gender deviance, queerness, and femininity) with villainy only serves to further alienate and demonize those who identify as mad or have been diagnosed with a mental illness. Video games, particularly role-playing games, have addressed madness in various ways since their inception, though usually in the form of villains and antagonists whose sole motivation for their evil deeds is their madness. Her research focuses on race and gender representation in video games and other media, with particular interest in monstrosity, hybridity, abjection, and otherness.
